Second Time Around
Although many of the Oriental rugs you find in stores today are newly woven, there are many rugs out there that have been in families for generations and are now on the resale market. Like antique furniture, Oriental rugs can maintain a value even after decades of use, if kept in good condition. In some cases, these older rugs are sought after by collectors and can demand very high prices! One rug at a recent Christie's auction fetched a price of $9.6 million! Here at Mousaian Oriental Rugs we have found a recent interest in previously owned rugs and we want to make sure everyone knows about this great service!
Mousaian Oriental Rugs is one of the only rug dealers in the Dayton area that offers consignment sales of previously owned rugs. We have an inventory of approximately 250 pre-owned Oriental rugs that vary in size, color, condition and price. Some of these rugs are considered antiques, some of them -- like the one shown here -- are newer and have never been used! What makes these rugs so appealing? Many things... most of our consignment rugs are considered "one-of-a-kind" rugs and you will never find that same rug in another home. Many are older rugs and although may have some wear or repair issues, maintain a wonderful character. And, many are much lower priced than a new rug of similar size and quality! All of our consignment rugs have been cleaned prior to being added to our inventory and their condition can range from fair to mint.
Did you know....
The United States government has issued another embargo against Iranian rugs, effective September 29, 2010. What does that mean for us? Not much, really. Most of the new rugs in our showroom come from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Very few rugs are coming to us from Iran since the first embargo that was imposed in the early 1980s. That embargo was lifted in 2000 in order to help improve the lives of many of the residents of Iran who relied on weaving as a way of life. During the time of that embargo, the Oriental rug industry shifted from predominately Iran-based to production in India, China and Pakistan. However, those Persian rugs then became highly sought after among collectors. Some of the highest quality rugs can come out of Iran. How will the embargo affect you? It probably won't! But if you currently own a true Persian (Iranian) rug, know that those are getting harder to come by! You can currently find many Iranian rugs in our consignment inventory.
Remember -- all handmade rugs, regardless of their country of origin, can maintain (and sometimes increase) in value over time if kept in good condition. For information on how to care for your rugs and keep them in mint condition visit the Care and Cleaning section of our website.
