Mousaian Oriental Rugs is a family-owned business that has evolved through four generations over 86 years. It began in 1922 when Simon Kirkjian, an immigrant from Armenia, opened a store on West First Street in downtown Dayton. His proximity to the former Rike’s Department Store enabled him to collaborate as their Oriental rug expert within their rug department.
Mr. Kirkjian sponsored Joseph Mousaian, his nephew from Turkey, to this country and took him under his wing. Joseph and his wife, Helen, learned the Oriental rug trade including cleaning and repairing. When Simon retired to California in the late 1940s, Mrs. Rike encouraged the Mousaians to expand their business which helped establish them as the Oriental rug experts in the Dayton area. They successfully operated from their home in Dayton View for forty years. Their reputation for personal care and high ethical standards endeared them to a wide circle of Oriental rug owners throughout the Miami Valley and beyond!
In 1984, Joe and Helen determined it was time to pass the business on to a third generation, their daughter Susanne Mousaian Weaver. She and her husband, Paul, who had recently retired from the U.S. Air Force, learned the craft and skills of Oriental rug sales and service from Joe and Helen. In 1987, they moved the business to a larger and more central location in downtown Dayton’s Oregon District. They artfully restored the annex of the former Central Christian Church to meet their expanding needs. The Oregon Historic District Society recognized these efforts with their annual property Improvement Award. For the next ten years, the business thrived in the Oregon District.
In 1998, they relocated once again to 1918 Brown Street, adjacent to the University of Dayton campus. This proved to be an ideal move where they could beautifully display their vast inventory of new and pre-owned handmade Oriental rugs. Their reputation for high ethical standards continues to follow them. In 2004, Mousaian Oriental Rugs was a finalist for the Better Business Bureau’s Eclipse Integrity Award.
Today, while Paul and Susie serve their clients with the personal touch known for generations, they are thrilled to welcome daughter-in-law, Jennifer Weaver, to the business. Jenn is the wife of their son Jeff. Jenn and Jeff have three children so it isn’t unusual to see a 5th generation Mousaian running around the store. Together, the Weaver family plans to continue this unique business for generations to come.
Mousaian Oriental Rugs made one more move in August of 2011 to its current location at 2419 Far Hills Ave. in Oakwood. The Weaver's are very excited about this new retail space and look forward to celebrating their centennial here soon!
